July 2022 Update: Transmission Fixed and Autocross Testing

  • Transmission Rebuild
    • I ended up dropping the money on a Quaife QDH3Y limited slip differential to drop into the car. It cost about $930 shipped direct from Quaife in the UK. All the US resellers had big markups on the diff. Quaife’s website makes it look questionable as to whether it’s actually in stock or not, but they shipped it relatively fast.
    • The rest of the transmission looked great inside. I had some difficulties finding the correct axle seals for the male axles vs the female axles that I had but otherwise everything came apart and went together as expected. Gave it a fresh coat of paint as well since I didn’t do that the first go around.
  • Autocross testing
    • Decided to test out the repaired transmission with an autocross at Atlanta Motorsports Park. Seems to work great! It’s definitely a little less noisy than the last OBX one. Hoping this one lasts for quite a while. The car definitely needs some driving improvements on a tight autocross like this. Boost lag is extremely noticable and the braking for such a light car is underwhelming due to the forward bias.
    • My friend is now the caretaker of the Wreck Racing E28 BMW we built in college and it made an appearance at the autocross as well. Man it’s fast!
    • My company Ampere EV had our electric DeLorean serving as the pace car and it participated in the autocross as well. About dead even times with my 818 on the small autocross course.
  • Misc Fixes
    • The car is already back apart and on jackstands to go through and fix a few more issues I’ve had.
      • Fuel filler neck seems to leak fuel in hard right turns with a full tank. I think just some hose clamp adjustment at the gas cap is needed.
      • Front door gap panels need to be made for water resistance.
      • Cleaning up the rear body seams and front fender mold lines to get the car to “10 footer” level appearance. Lot of work for somewhat small results!
      • Replacing the rear hatch struts with 40lb ones. The 30lb ones provided by FFR don’t quite hold it up and it has been a nuisance.
      • 3D printing a new intake mount, maybe with an airbox to come later.
      • Clutch doesn’t quite want to bleed right, not sure if the reservoir is clogged/bad master or if the pedal just needs further adjustment. It simply doesn’t suck in new fluid when trying to bleed it.
  • Ampere EV
    • The EV conversion system start-up is coming along well! Continues to take a lot of my time off of things like 818 work, but we’re nearing the end of development of our V1 system and it’s shipping out to customers now. Our product is a fully integrated EV drivetrain that includes everything except for vehicle-specific mounting solutions. Our development and show vehicle is a 1982 DeLorean DMC-12 we have converted with the full suite of products such as air conditioning, power steering, fast charging, etc in addition to our standard battery modules, controllers, and display products.

Feb 2022 Update!: Transmission Failure

  • It been a long time since my last update! Some general info here:
    • The car now lives my startup’s headquarters in Dawsonville, GA. Way more space, just no more time!
    • I’ve put about 5,000 miles on the car including a couple track days and autocrosses.
    • Pretty much nothing else has changed (besides what’s below…)! I’ve just been driving it on occasion.
  • Transmission Failure 🙁
    • While cruising around in North Georgia with some friends, I suddenly lost any drive after a downshift. 5 hours, and one tow, later I was able to easily diagnose the issue. The output of my OBX differential had sheared off on the drivers side – meaning the diff was free to spin as it pleased without providing any torque to the other wheel.
    • Some background here: The transmission in my car is a frankenstein monster that I put together because I was on a college budget and wanted an LSD. Due to a series of unfortunate events I had two separate broken tranmissions (thankfully in different ways). I cobbled the gearset from one with the case, ring, and pinion from the other to make one transmission. I added to this an Ebay-special OBX helical limited slip differential because I could not afford the Cusco unit at the time and honestly I preferred to have a helical anyways. I had initially expected that something with my rebuild had failed but this turned out not to be the case.
    • What this means for me:
      • Replacing the differential requires fully removing the transmission and taking it apart – not a quick job.
      • My “ideal” fix would be to find one of the rare JDM 5-speeds with a front LSD from the factory. These go for about $700-$800 dollars and would drop right in. They have a helical differential in them but I’m not sure from who.
      • If I cannot find a unicorn transmission I can either spend $900 on a Cusco clutch-type differential or I can throw a cheap/free open diff in a call it a day while I wait for the time or money to have something better.
  • I will certainly fix it eventually, but tbd on when and how it will get fixed. There are numerous other things on the car I need to fix or finish such as the door sealing, bodywork edges, and fuel tank venting. These may or may not get wrapped into a “Phase 2” of the build.

  • After a very long drought of any meaningful work on the car I have resumed getting the list of to-dos done. I’ve been quite busy lately with my startup, but I want to use the car some this Summer and prepare it for not being a shed-kept project, but rather something that is good enough to keep with me as a not-daily but regular driver.
  • Interior
    • I left the interior extremely basic for the last year. No carpet, no finishings, questionable water-tightness. These made the car a bit difficult to live with on a longer-term basis so I am seeking to remedy them. Plus a headliner and carpet will make the inside of this car look so much better!
    • I have wrapped the center console in my headliner materal to get practice on a smaller piece. I’m pretty bad a uphostering it seems but I think I do it “good enough”.
    • Finishing adding Killmat insulation in preparation for carpeting.
    • Headliner hopefully being glued in next weekend!
  • Body
    • I have finished sanding the passenger side A-pillar area. It’s definitely a 6/10 finishing job but it’s better than before!
    • Planning to continue fixing the really rough areas and leaving the car as a 10-footer until I decide to get serious about making it look good.
    • Doing the first real fiberglass repair at the front edge of the hood – hoping I can make it presentable.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Doors locks appear to be non-functional due to a bad chinesium module. Spent another $25 to replace from Amazon hoping the second unit works for longer – we’ll see.
    • I’ve had an issue with fuel coming out the vent when the tank is full. I’m going to reroute the line and add a rollover valve to the end to prevent this issue.
    • I am adding cutouts to the rear windows to increase engine bay ventilation and reduce circulation inside there. This should help with my fumes in the cabin at speed.

  • New Job!
    • I have just graduated Georgia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a concentration in Automotive Engineering. Now, I am cofounding a company, Ampere EV, with a couple others. Our company is creating integrated solutions for the DIY EV market, including safer modular battery assemblies and integrated control electronics. Super early in the project timeline right now, but it’s entirely possible some of our companies products ends up in an 818 while we’re developing it and I’d certainly share that on here if that becomes the case.
  • New Website! (Coming Soon)
    • I have been working on completely rebuilding my website from the ground up. I assume if you’re subscribed to this list, you’ve seen my current site. It’s built entirely on Google Sites and has been super easy to setup and maintain. Great option for a low-maintenance site! But now, between work and driving the car, the build is slowing down (not stopping though) and the documentation of my car becomes more useful than the ability for people to follow along. Google sites has been great from a simplicity standpoint, but it’s really limited in the format I can present the information and integrations are pretty basic. Above all, it’s very poorly optimized for search engines (funny because Google…). My new website is being built with WordPress, and the customization options are endless! Honestly too much, and the nerd in me keeps messing with all the fancy plugins, but in the end this is going to make my site way better for organizing a large quantity of information and advertising that info to people on search engines. I’d gotten to the point where the things I was trying to add were outgrowing what Google Sites was really built to support so my workarounds got increasingly complex.
    • Old setup: Google Sites + Blogger + Disqus + Feedburner 
    • New Setup: WordPress
      • Self hosted – I have my own Linux server I’m running the site off of so I still won’t be paying hosting fees. Meaning all I pay for this is $12/year for the domain.
      • Plus tons and tons of plugins
        • Elementor – drag and drop webpage builder for WordPress. I don’t care to code.
        • Mail chimp – new email subscription manager
        • Yoast SEO – search engine optimizer
        • AutoOptimizer – shrinks down content to make pages load faster
        • Smush – Shrinks images on upload to web-friendly size formats
        • Enviry Gallery – Let’s me build really nice photo galleries
      • Still fleshing it out and figuring out how I want to organize things. It’s easy to get stuck to the old format, but in many cases there is now much better ways for me to organize things. I’m sure the new site will continue to change a lot even after it goes

  •  I’ve put another 1000 miles or so on the car driving it around. Even encountered some sub-freezing temps on a trip to the North Carolina mountains and overall everything is still working pretty great! There are a few little issues below though that have been added to the to-fix list.
    • Driver door window needs to be pressed into the window seal better – trying to think of ways to do this because the adjustment is maxed out.
    • New squeak in the left rear suspension.
    • 1 of my 5 epoxy cable tie mounts release – I think this one needed better surface prep.
    • Tons of rear brake dust – don’t really know why it’s different than the front as the front brakes work much harder.
    • ABS pump is definitely bad after further diagnosis- ordered a replacement.
    • Engine area gets road grime on it easily- may be worth creating an undertray.
  • Existing Issues
    • Passenger door mirror is absolutely useless without a new mount
    • Water/air entry in the footwell through the front of the doors
  • Improvements
    • Designing a trunk
    • Working on roof scoop mesh/trim
    • Carpeting happening…eventually. Want to make sure everything is good before I put it in.
  • Teardown of Engine #1
    • This is the engine I originally aimed to use in the car, but unfortunately met an untimely end a little over a year ago at the dyno tuner. It was a EJ205/EJ255 “hybrid” build. It’s been sitting in the corner since and I’ve finally started taking it apart to recoup money and get rid of the thing. Also curious at what exactly failed.
      • Upon closer inspection, I actually did a pretty good job on 90% of the engine build! Very few leaks. The heads looked good. The pistons and piston walls looked good. But judging by the pile of metal shavings in the oil pan I clearly messed up some portion of the main or rod bearing install/tolerancing. Haven’t gotten the short block apart yet. Difficult learning experience, but definitely did get a lot from it.
      • If you’re in need of any Subaru engine parts, I’ve got quite a few.

  • Track Day: I took the 818 to its first track day at Atlanta Motorsports park. I got to do 2 sessions of about 10 laps each. Overall the car did great! It was certainly fast and the temperatures all stayed in check throughout the session. The car does need some alignment improvements and working ABS/proportioning is high on my list of fixes.   • Intake Plenum
    • I built and painted my aluminum intake plenum. It was cut on the waterjet and painted in wrinkle black paint. It appears to work and everything looked great on track so I suppose it’s a win!
  • Upcoming Plans
    • I have intentions to build a trunk, passenger side mirror mount, interior water fixes, and some body sanding in the next month or so. I will see how much I can get done, but those items would be some great improvements to the driveability of the car.

  • Took the car out for its first autocross! Had blast and the car did surprisingly well. I thought it would be twitchier based on how it turns in on the road, but it seems like that feeling is just an initial turn in thing. As usual, found a few things here and there to fix/improve and the big bumps on this course shifted my toe alignment a bit so I need to check what slipped. My guess is the rear lateral arms.
  •  Small improvements
    • Noticed a week ago my rear wiring tie downs were failing and risking burning the wire on the exhaust. So I bought these epoxy zip tie mounts from McMaster and these things are freaking awesome! They come with this plastic casing around them with small adhesive strips that clamps the mount to the surface while the epoxy cures. Then you remove the casing and you’re left with just the little swiveling mount. Very cool. They seem like they’ll hold up super well.
    • Added the rear mesh trim and surround.
  • Working on building my intercooler ducting this week in preparation for track time.

  • General Update: Have been driving the car for a month now, here’s how it’s gone. Mostly good, with the exception of 1 breakdown…the car sprung a coolant leak on the way back from the alignment shop and required a tow. It was the upper radiator hose, which is a pain to get to, but I got it fixed and the car was back driving around the same day (good because it was my only car in ATL). 
  • Ongoing Work
    • Installed oil temp and oil pressure gauges in preparation for some track driving later this year. My engine thankfully already had the adapter on the oil cooler which made my job easier. I also had the foresight a year or so ago to run 2 extra wires between the dash and engine bay which worked perfectly to run to the gauges.
    • Still diagnosing my ABS issues. I replaced the control module, but not the pump. The issue continues…so verdict is the pump is bad. I forgot to double check the fuses were still good as the last setup was blowing the ABS fuse. Assuming the fuse is not blown, then I will probably have to buy a new ABS pump to install. 
    • Found out my fuel gauge’s lowest reading is a little under 1/4 tank…engine cut out as I pulled into the gas station and I had to coast to the pump.

  • Small update, but really only fairly small things left on the build with the exception of bodywork. Drove the car back to Atlanta for the next few weeks. Attended a big monthly car show called Caffeine and Octane. Had to park in the boonies of the parking lot because I left from 1.5hrs away and didn’t get there before 7 to make the “main” lot. Still got quite a few people asking about it as I came/left. I think it intrigues people because they generally have no idea what it is.
  • Bug fixes
    • Hopefully fixed the leaky gas filler neck.
    • Changed the wiper sweep to not hit the hood.
    • Fixed the passenger door. Had two issues there, the lock mechanism needed to be adjusted to not interfere with the interior door release. The interior door handle cable was also getting caught by the window regulator which was bad so I fixed that as well.
    • Cut a section of the rear driver’s wheel well out so I could adjust it higher so it doesn’t rub. I need to clean this up a bit but it seems my fix is working.
  • Little improvements
    • Cupholder installed
    • e-brake handle boot installed
    • Dashcam via my head unit and usb camera is setup.  Can also do track footage with it.

  • Caffeine and Octane


  • Super early 6am departure


  • E-brake boot and trim installed

  • Daily Driver Summary
    • Had a blast driving the 818 for a couple weeks. Still very happy that nothing major went wrong. At the same time, this thing is definitely never going to be a single-car level daily driver. Switching back to my normal car definitely makes me appreciate the quietness and relative comfort for long drives or around the rougher roads of Atlanta. Also, the below list of issues shows there’s still lots of little things to work on.
    • Issues
      • Gas filler neck has a slow drip where it is coupled to the bottom of the gas tank. Definitely something to fix.
      • Windshield wiper sweep needs to change slightly towards the driver’s side. It hits the hood on the fast setting.
      • Front hood corner rubs the A-pillar on the driver’s side. Just a small trim needed.
      • Passenger side door lock gets stuck locked sometimes. Need to investigate.
      • Driver’s door window doesn’t seal perfectly towards the rear.
      • Water intrusion through the front of the door/footwell area. Needs a panel created to fill the space.
      • Very slight wheel well rubbing at full steering lock in the front.
  • Interior Insulation
    • Covered the rear firewall in Kilmat sound deadening. Similar to dynamat. I only plan to cover the rear wall fully, everywhere else will have it used more sparingly.
    • I finished making the shoulder cover panel on the driver’s side. Passenger side is almost done, just needs a few small things finished on it.
    • Added some adhesive-backed foam to the corners of the firewall to better seal off the engine bay.
    • Carpeting coming soon I hope!
  • Radio
    • So I quickly realized after dailying the car that a few things on the radio needed to be streamlined. Notably, if I plan to use streaming services mostly I need it to auto-load because it’s annoying to restart it manually every single time you get in the car.
    • Configured my front dash-cam software. It will work with a USB 1080P camera I have that I will mount behind the rearview mirror. This gives me not only a dashcam but also a built-in go-pro type cam that can be used with track apps.
    • Installed FCC Launcher which is designed for use in car with Android head units. This app is awesome! It auto-launches my music apps and my dashcam app on startup. It also makes it easy to have large icons that are car-friendly.

  • Shoulder panel finished


  • Going to need a “lip” here eventually to seal the door off


  • New radio home screen layout with FCC Launcher


  • Some roof insulation


  • Firewall insulation


  • Survived two weeks of adventuring
